Introduction

A solid and compact RapidWeaver theme; suited to a wide range of different projects demanding a clean and contemporary appearance. In the past, Wilderness has been successfully used for news websites, education portals, blogs, business websites, real estate websites, travel / tourism and church websites. Wilderness works reliably with all major web browsers. This is a fully responsive RapidWeaver theme optimised for both tablet and mobile devices. Pages published using Wilderness load quickly and have a 'snappy' feel to them. Work has also been done to ensure your pages are optimised to a high degree for search engines and for print / PDF output.

Wilderness was originally inspired by the Sharp theme, shipped in early versions of RapidWeaver. It's one of the very first theme designs offered through ThemeFlood, but remains popular. Over the past several years, Wilderness has evolved to offer a comprehensive array of customisable style and colour settings. Plus many of the usual features you would expect to find in ThemeFlood themes!

Ideal for larger websites

Wilderness provides the choice between a split or block navigation layout on desktop, and a toggle / accordion style navigation layout on screens less than 996px wide. This makes the theme ideally suited for larger websites consisting of several hundred pages. Unlike drop-downs (that require a lot of effort on the users part to navigate), split and block navigation layouts are really simple. You just display the pages relevant to that particular section of the website. These navigation layout promote excellent usability and make it easier for your website users to find what they're looking for. Additionally, the page they are currently on is clearly highlighted.

Responsive, mobile first

Wilderness does-away with the idea of building separate websites for different devices. This theme will help you present you content cleanly and consistently on all screen sizes. Mobile first means that we load the minimum amount of styling code for mobile devices first (these are typically running over slower internet connections) and then load additional code for laptops, desktops and all other larger screens. This method of page rendering is fast-becoming an established standard in web development; something recognised amongst nearly all professional and expert web developers. The most noticeable difference is that you'll find your webpages load quicker; with less awkward shifting and resizing as the page loads.

Sidebar

The sidebar in this RapidWeaver theme can be floated on either the left or right of the theme content container (floating happens on all screen greater than 992px wide). The sidebar is available in a choice of widths, so you can choose a sidebar that best-fits your content. On smaller screens the sidebar is rendered below the main content container. You can also choose to toggle-off the display of the sidebar altogether; although please not ether sidebar is needed for the display of navigation links and some RapidWeaver page types (like the Blog and RapidFAQ) make use of the sidebar to output links.

Bootstrap ready

Wilderness includes the complete Twitter Bootstrap 4 framework. This grants you access to a wide choice of instant, additional styling and functionality you can add to your websites. This can save you the time and cost of having to buy lots of extra RapidWeaver addons and let you access the most popular frontend web development framework available. You can download a free pack of Bootstrap code snippets using the link on this webpage. These code snippets work in all RapidWeaver page types.

FreeStyle banner

The banner region in Wilderness is FreeStyle-enabled. We provide 20 example banner images to help you get started. You can freely use these images in your projects, or you can use your own images. As always, dragging and dropping a custom image named header.jpg, banner.jpg or freestyle.jpg into your styled text sidebar will instantly embed it within the theme banner container. More documentation on FreeStyle banners is available in the Wiki.
