IntroductionAs the name suggests, Black & White is a fairly minimalist RapidWeaver theme with a default black and white colour scheme. First released publicly in late 2006, Black & White has always maintained a strong following with bloggers, artists and photographers wanting a simple yet robust RapidWeaver theme to work with. The high contrasting colour scheme lends itself well to websites which are particularly content-heavy, and the minimalist style gives content that extra bit of breathing space.
Build biggerThe optimised nature of Black & White lends this theme well towards building larger websites of up-to several hundred pages. The option is provided in the theme style settings to switch between either a split or sidebar block navigation layout. Unlike a drop-down menu, these more primitive navigation layouts can handle many more page links and are easy for end users to find their way around.
Style settingsJust about every aspect of the Black & White theme can be customised. Numerous colour settings are provided which can be used to adjust almost every aspect of the page. A slew of other useful theme settings are included, such as title bar positioning, body background, font faces, font styles, logo placement, sidebar width and position, navigation layout and theme width. Useful miscellaneous theme style settings like fade-in allow you to have the page fade into view after loading, and settings like splash screen let you create an effective landing page at the entrance to your website.
Banner-lessBlack & White does not have a true header or banner container as such, although ExtraContent4 can double-up as a convenient banner container, within the space above the content container. This ExtraContent container is also FreeStyle enabled, so it can be used with the standard FreeStyle code snippet or the free FreeStyle slideshow stack. To make Black & White a banner-less RapidWeaver theme was quite a bold design decision to make; but many existing users are appreciative of the extra speed and flexibility this has promoted.
ResponsiveThis is a fully responsive RapidWeaver theme; meaning that you can opt for a maximum-width, which then scales down on smaller screens (without horizontal scrollbars appearing). Black & White harnesses the RAFT (Responsive Adaptive Framework for Themes) to provide excellent tablet and smart phone optimisations. Aspects of content like images and basic video can be set to behave responsively as well. So Black & White is very much a future-proofed RapidWeaver theme.
Be socialBlack & White provides support for a social media bar. This ultra-flexible container utilises ExtraContent1 and can be configured to display a horizontal bar or a floating box of social networking links. Numerous positioning options are provided, so you can play-around with the social media bar and find a style combination that works perfectly for your website layout. Into the social bar, you can place icons for various social media and bookmarking services. This in turn provides a great method for people to share or bookmark your website easily.
CompatibilityBlack & White is compatible with all major web browsers, including IE7, IE8, IE9, IE10, IE11, and the latest versions of Safari, Firefox, Chrome and Opera too. It's also a theme that plays well with lots of popular RapidWeaver page style plugins and Stack elements. For people not afraid to delve into HTML code, both the Bootstrap 3.0 toolkit and Font Awesome 4.0 icons are supported in the latest versions of Black & White. These give you the ability to include extra functionality and embellishments in your page designs.
Get startedA free demo version of the theme is available for you to download using the button at the top right.
